SWEPT-PATH: noun (plural Swept Paths)
The envelope swept out by the sides of the vehicle body, or any other part of the structure of the vehicle.

Roundabout Design

Swept Path Analysis plays an important part in Roundabout design, especially in the more ambitious roundabouts. Roundabouts are usually designed to establish a better flow of traffic and therefore a Roundabout must be well designed.

Depending on the location of the roundabout it must be accessible for a wide range of vehicles. If a Roundabout would not be properly designed it could happen that a big truck comes by and is not able to make the curve on the roundabout. In that case the truck would either have to drive over the center island or would end up besides the actual road.

With roundabout design it does not end there as there are different types of roundabout to take into account. Beside single lane, dual lane and multi lane. We can also speak about circular or non-circular roundabouts and recently about so-called Turbo-Roundabouts.

All types of roundabouts have 1 thing in common. They fully depend on swept path analysis to make sure all vehicles can drive safely.
