Road Design
Talking about swept path is probably most common in combination with Road Design. We could say it is the most important factor to keep in mind when designing roads. Most roads are build for vehicles, swept path analysis then helps to determine wether that road design, is also suitable for specific vehicles.
Now anyone can design a road that is super wide so all vehicles fit without problems. The challenge lies with designing a road that uses a smaller with, but is still accesible to most road vehicles. We speak about 'most' vehicles as not all areas need to be accessed by all vehicles. If you look at a big transportation truck, it is unlikely and probably unwanted that such a truck goes cruising through a residential area. So when designing roads for residential area's, the design needs to be big enough for the garbage truck or an ambulance, but not necessarily for any big vehicle that does not belong in a residential area. |
