Turning TemplatesAs most vehicles are manufactured following a certain guideline, we are able to create vehicle libraries that follow these guidelines. With these vehicle libraries traffic engineers can create templates that show the swept path of these vehicles. Such templates are usually referred to as 'Turning Templates' as they show the space needed for a vehicle to make a turn.
Vehicle Turning Templates are to be placed on-top of a road design where the template will show the path of the design vehicle. By tracking this path the road designer can determine whether the newly designed road or existing road is suitable for a specific vehicle. Regarding the vehicle guidelines, on most cases these are set by regional requirements. For instance, every country is using their own specific fire trucks. So a traffic engineer needs to use turning templates based on the regional guidelines for their project. |
Turning Templates are slowly becoming obsolete due to new technological development. A good example is "AutoTURN online" where users can calculate swept paths online, without using a CAD platform.
